Pelvic Surgery

Pelvic surgery can be used to both diagnose as well as treat causes of infertility and Laurel Fertility Care utilizes a “minimally invasive” surgical approach whenever possible. This advanced approach uses very small incisions in the abdomen to insert an endoscope and directly examine the pelvic cavity, uterus, fallopian tubes and ovaries on a video monitor. The technique, called laparoscopy, can provide a detailed view of the reproductive organs that ultrasound and radiological procedures cannot. Specific conditions such as endometriosis, tubal blockages and pelvic adhesions (scarring) can be identified and treated immediately using this procedure, which also has the added benefit of a very short recovery time and minimal scarring. Studies have showed that patients have a better chance of conceiving after treatment of endometriosis or after removing blocked fallopian tubes.

Hysteroscopy is another minimally invasive surgical option where an endoscope is inserted through the cervix to examine the inside of the uterus for abnormalities that could interfere with embryo implantation or be the cause of recurrent miscarriages. Specific conditions such as polyps, uterine septum, uterine scarring, and fibroids (myomas) can be identified and treated as well. Treating these conditions have also been shown to improve pregnancy and delivery rates.
